This Is Your Body On The Standard American Diet (SAD)

Back in the late 80's and early 90's the Partnership For a Drug-Free America launched a campaign to help fight narcotic drug abuse in the United States. It became known as the This Is Your Brain On Drugs campaign. It sparked a lot of attention in bringing to light the consequences of using illegal drugs on human health and brain function.

Now it's time for a new campaign. I call it the This Is Your Body On The Standard American Diet campaign. Animal-based and processed foods have been linked in numerous studies to a number of chronic diseases seen in today's world. Obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, dementia, diverticulitis, autoimmune diseases, ADHD, irritable bowel syndrome, and many others all are highly correlated to eating a diet consisting of meat, dairy, eggs, and processed foods. These are all preventable and/or reversible in many cases just by changing what's on your plate and adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet.

Not everyone realizes the consequences of their food choices and the resulting health implications from these choices. Part of the reason is because it may take years or even decades for these diseases to show up. I see the pain and suffering first hand every single day from these diseases as patient after patient shows up in the hospital I work at. Here's exactly what happens to those who continue to eat a SAD diet of animal-based and processed foods day after day.

  2. Hi Dustin, great article and to be avoided photos. Makes me want to bow down to my decision to go PBD nine years ago this coming spring after 20 years as veggie and 11 years vegan.

My doctor told me I was "boringly healthy" after a recent physical including check in with cardiologist!

I had a yes or no question for Dr. Esselstyn recently and to may shocking surprise, he called me at 11:30 his time on the east coast on Thanksgiving eve. I was shocked. First that he actually called and 2nd at the hour and on T/eve as well. He told me he was an old fashioned kind of a guy. We had a nice chat and I told him what the doctor said and we went over some things. He gave me explicit instructions to eat more veggies and have that tbl of flax seed powder and those were istructions from "god" himself. He's just deligtful really.

I told him I met Dr. Campbel at the SF Veg Fest and he said he probably be there next year.

What fun and how wonderful it is to be healthy and not have any of those problems above.

    Enjoy your holidays Dustin.

  4. What a beautiful film - such stunning images in the veggies and fruits! And the message is a perfect match for my column next week at Vegan Mainstream - about what I call "Vegan Venn Diagrams" - where our reasons intersect to create our dietary choices. Thanks for inviting me by!

  5. Wow! Just wow! I'd like to forward this blog posting to some of my loved ones, but I actually don't know if that is the right thing to do. Something is telling me that my being pushy will push people away and I need to chill out and just let people come to it on their own. Now, if the government were to do it, that's another story! You should submit this to Congresspeople and Senators and see if they do anything with it. Probably not, because they are bought and paid for by big agribusiness. But it's worth a shot!

  6. Great video Dustin! Thanks for summarizing the nutrition concerns so nicely.

I will promote it to everyone I can.

There was one little bit that wasn't quite accurate - a small thing, but I like accuracy in reporting. There's a claim that chia seeds are superior to flax seeds and Dr. Greger's nutritiondata.org website is attributed as the source. I watched Dr. Greger's video which rates flax seeds as superior (you have to watch the whole video--a company that promotes chia seeds claimed that they have 25 times the lignan content of flax seeds. Dr. Greger said that was incredible, literally. He challenged them on that claim and it turned out, he said, that they were lying.

Flax seeds have 20% more Omega 3 fatty acids than chia seeds; chia seeds have 50% more fibre than flax seeds, but flax seeds still have a higher lignan content.

    Best regards.

  7. Dustin....All I can say is...WOW! A picture (or in this case, many pictures) is worth a thousand words!
My hubby & I have been eating this way since the 1970's with no major health issues & no need for numerous doctor visits. We eat a PBD, go for long walks in nature & do Yoga. We get massages once a month or so. That's about it! This stuff works! It's almost too simple to believe that it's true! And...face it, the real reason more people don't know about this is that there's no Broccoli Conglomerate! No cooperation can make stacks of cash off of veggies!
I'm going to send this to my Yoga students. They roll their eyeballs when I start to talk about the benefits of a PBD as if my skin suddenly
turned green & I became an alien from another universe!
Seeing is believing! And...the info is coming from an MD to boot!
    Thanks & happy holidays!
