Heart Health - Statins vs Diet

February is American Heart Month and everybody is going red in support of building healthy hearts. There's fundraisers, walks for the cure, and even activities to teach kids about healthy hearts. While these events are a great way to raise money and awareness for cardiovascular disease, many of them fall far short of spreading the message that truly needs to be heard to rid ourselves of this devastating disease.

The video below is a portion of my lecture on using drugs vs diet for the prevention, treatment, and reversal of cardiovascular disease. I discuss the evidence-based data from clinical trials on both treatment approaches allowing you to see how well (or not) each approach works in tackling the number one killer in the world—cardiovascular disease.

  1. How do you feel about the necessity of statins (5 mg crestor per day) for a vegan of 3 years who is still diabetic (on metformin, A1C 6.1-6.3)?

    1. I always try to tell others that it's not about the "v" words (vegan and vegetarian). Eating vegan can consist of healthy foods or it can consist of eating junk foods. Do your very best to eat a whole foods, plant-based diet. One hundred percent is best. This gives you the best chance at reversing diabetes and coronary heart disease. All I can say regarding taking medications for cholesterol is that the studies say that those who achieve a total cholesterol of less than 150 mg/dl are in a great position to 'heartattack proof' themselves. Vegans may have a difficult time hitting this number if the details of their diet aren't a focus of theirs. All oils, refined sugars, and processed vegan foods should be eliminated in order to do so. If this is done it is likely anyone eating a healthy version of the vegan diet can achieve their numbers.
